Xi and EU Leaders Exchange Congratulations to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations
On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a congratulatory exchange with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU).

In his message, Xi emphasized that China and the EU are comprehensive strategic partners, two significant forces advocating multipolarization, two primary markets supporting globalization, and two civilizations endorsing diversity.
He reflected on the evolution of the relationship over the past 50 years, highlighting that China and the EU have engaged in extensive exchanges across various levels and sectors. Xi remarked on the successful dialogue and cooperation, the vibrancy of cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and the effectiveness of multilateral coordination.
Xi pointed out that the relationship has evolved into one of the most significant bilateral connections globally, playing a crucial role in enhancing the well-being of both populations and fostering world peace and development.
Acknowledging the rapid changes occurring globally and the pivotal moment for humanity, Xi noted that a healthy and stable relationship between China and the EU not only facilitates mutual achievements but also serves to illuminate the global landscape.
He expressed his commitment to the further development of China-EU relations and readiness to collaborate with Costa and von der Leyen to utilize this 50th anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on past experiences, deepen strategic communication, enhance mutual understanding and trust, strengthen partnerships, promote openness, effectively manage disputes, and work towards a brighter future for bilateral ties.
Xi urged both sides to uphold their commitment to multilateralism, advocate for fairness and justice, oppose unilateralism and intimidation, unite to tackle global challenges, and jointly build a fair and orderly multipolar world alongside inclusive economic globalization—thereby contributing more effectively to worldwide peace, stability, development, and prosperity.
In response, EU leaders acknowledged that over the last 50 years, China has experienced unprecedented and sustained economic growth. They highlighted that China and the EU have developed extensive connections, becoming each other's most significant trading partners and enhancing the well-being of their populations and the prosperity of their economies.
In light of global uncertainty and geopolitical changes, the EU leaders affirmed their readiness to deepen partnerships with China, enhance exchanges and cooperation, adhere to the principles of the United Nations Charter, collaboratively confront common challenges, and advance global peace, security, prosperity, and sustainable development.
