Trump Announces Intent to Request China's Assistance in Resolving Ukraine Conflict
US President Donald Trump indicated that he might seek China’s assistance in his efforts to promote peace between Russia and Ukraine. He suggested that Beijing could play a role in reconciling the positions of Moscow and Kiev, potentially paving...

“It is a natural thing to ask,” the president remarked when a journalist inquired whether he would consider asking China to help close the gap between Russia and Ukraine. “I think so, yes,” he added.
The relationship between Washington and Beijing has been tense recently due to Trump's implementation of substantial tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods. He justified this decision by citing concerns related to national security and trade imbalances. In response, Beijing has accused Washington of “economic bullying,” retaliating with 125% tariffs on all US imports and rolling out export controls.
On Thursday, Trump expressed optimism that the two nations could overcome their disputes and negotiate a deal that would be advantageous for both. Last week, the Chinese Commerce Ministry announced that it was considering the possibility of trade negotiations with the US, but stressed that Washington must demonstrate “sincerity” by eliminating its tariffs if it hopes to engage in meaningful discussions.
Trump's comments coincided with Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Russia. Xi is among over two dozen world leaders anticipated to participate in events in Moscow commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. During his visit, the Chinese leader also engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin that lasted longer than seven hours.
Prior to these discussions, Xi lauded the strong ties between China and Russia. He stated that China is prepared to “jointly bear a special responsibility with Russia, as major world powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council” to counteract “negative trends of unilateral actions and power-based coercion in the world.”
