On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping shared a signed article entitled "Learning from History to Build Together a Brighter Future" in the Russian Gazette. This publication precedes his arrival in Russia for a state visit and his participation in the festivities commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War.

The article reads in full:
Learning from History to Build Together a Brighter Future
H.E. Xi Jinping
President of the People's Republic of China
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War, and the World Anti-Fascist War, alongside the founding of the United Nations. At this time of year when "apple and pear trees are blossoming," I will shortly visit Russia for a state visit and to take part in the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War. I will join the valiant Russian people in commemorating our shared history and honoring the fallen heroes.
Reflecting on my previous visit around this time ten years ago, I attended the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the victory. I arranged a special meeting with 18 Russian veterans who had bravely faced the perils of battlefields during both the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War and the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Their unwavering spirit and resilience made a lasting impression on me. Sadly, several veterans, including General M. Gareyev and Major General T. Shchudlo, have since passed. I extend my deepest respect to them and all veterans, from generals to foot soldiers, for their extraordinary sacrifices in the fight against fascism. We will always remember them. Heroes never perish; their noble spirit endures.
Throughout the World Anti-Fascist War, the Chinese and Russian peoples stood together in mutual support. During the darkest moments of the Chinese resistance, the Soviet Volunteer Group, part of the Soviet Air Force, flew to Nanjing, Wuhan, and Chongqing to combat the Japanese invaders, showing great bravery and some sacrificing their lives. Conversely, during the Soviet Union's critical struggle against fascism, Yan Baohang, a legendary intelligence agent from the Communist Party of China known as the "Richard Sorge of the East," provided crucial intelligence to the Soviet Union. Throughout those war-torn years, the Soviet Union supplied China with arms and equipment, while China ensured vital strategic supplies flowed to the Soviet Union, establishing a supply line through the treacherous Gobi Desert. This lifeline was essential for our combined efforts against fascism. The strong bond formed through our shared sacrifices and camaraderie flows as persistently and powerfully as the Yellow River and the Volga, serving as an everlasting source of our friendship.
Eighty years ago, the forces of justice, including those from China and the Soviet Union, united in courageous combat against shared enemies, ultimately defeating the overbearing fascist powers. Yet today, we face challenges such as unilateralism, hegemonism, bullying, and coercive practices that threaten international stability once more. Humanity now finds itself at a crossroads: unity or division, dialogue or confrontation, win-win cooperation or zero-sum scenarios. In "War and Peace," Leo Tolstoy remarks, "History is the life of nations and of humanity." Indeed, the lessons of history are enduring and serve as guiding lights to the present and future. We must learn from history, particularly the grim lessons of the Second World War, drawing wisdom and resilience from the World Anti-Fascist War's triumph to resist hegemonism and power politics. Together, we can strive for a brighter future for all humanity.
— We must maintain an accurate historical perspective on WWII. China and the Soviet Union were at the center of the conflict in Asia and Europe, respectively, and were essential in resisting Japanese militarism and Nazi Germany, significantly contributing to the World Anti-Fascist War's success. The Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression began first and lasted longest. Uniting under the banner of the Chinese united front against Japanese aggression—established by the CPC—the Chinese people mounted a fierce resistance and ultimately overcame the brutal militarists. With immense sacrifice, they composed an immortal saga of valiant resistance and victory. In Europe, the Soviet Red Army surged forward, determined and courageous, defeating Nazi Germany and liberating millions from its brutal occupation, thereby etching an epic of triumph in the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War.
History teaches that light always conquers darkness and justice prevails over evil. The International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg and the International Military Tribunal for the Far East brought war criminals to justice. Their legitimacy and historical significance stand uncontested. Any efforts to distort WWII's historical truth, deny its victorious resolution, or belittle the crucial roles of China and the Soviet Union are destined to fail. Neither of our nations nor the global community will permit acts that seek to reverse history's course.
— We must resolutely defend the postwar international order. The establishment of the UN reflects the most significant decision by the international community post-WWII. Both China and the Soviet Union were among the first to sign the UN Charter. Our permanent seats on the UN Security Council were earned through sacrifice and history. As global situations grow more turbulent, we must uphold the UN's authority, defend the UN-centered international system, uphold international law, and promote an equitable, orderly multipolar world and inclusive economic globalization.
Moreover, this year also marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration. Taiwan's return to China is a victorious outcome of WWII and a crucial aspect of the postwar international order. Legal instruments such as the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation all affirm China's sovereignty over Taiwan. The historical and legal basis for this sovereignty cannot be contested, nor can the authority of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. Regardless of developments on Taiwan or external disturbances, the trend towards China's inevitable reunification remains unstoppable.
China and Russia consistently support one another regarding core interests and major concerns. Russia firmly adheres to the one-China principle, reaffirming that Taiwan is a non-negotiable part of China, opposing any form of "Taiwan independence," and backing all measures taken by the Chinese government and people towards national unification. China appreciates Russia's steadfast stance.
— We must staunchly advocate for international fairness and justice. Global deficits in peace, development, security, and governance continue to widen. To tackle these challenges, I propose building a community with a shared future for mankind, along with the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative to guide necessary reforms in global governance towards greater fairness and justice.
Our world needs justice, not hegemonism. History demonstrates that effectively addressing global challenges requires a vision of global governance driven by extensive collaboration and mutual benefit. We must choose dialogue over confrontation, partnerships rather than alliances, and cooperation instead of zero-sum strategies. True multilateralism involves accommodating the legitimate concerns of all parties and upholding international norms and laws. It is my firm belief that the international community will opt to align with the right side of history.
China and Russia, as significant global players, are constructive forces dedicated to sustaining global strategic stability and enhancing international governance. Our bilateral relationship is underpinned by historical logic, strong internal motivations, and deep cultural ties. This partnership is not directed against any third party and remains resilient against disruption. Together, we must thwart any attempts to destabilize our friendship and remain undeterred by transient challenges. Leveraging the certainty and resilience of our strategic coordination will be crucial as we jointly foster the transition towards a multipolar world and strive for a community with a shared future for humanity.
China and Russia are both great nations with rich civilizations. The peoples of both nations embody heroic legacies. Eight decades ago, our peoples triumphed in the anti-fascist war through their remarkable struggles. Today, we must take all necessary measures to protect our sovereignty, security, and developmental interests. Let us be the guardians of historical memory, partners in national development and rejuvenation, and advocates for global fairness and justice, as we work together to forge a brighter future for all humanity.
