US President Donald Trump recently posted an AI-created image of himself in papal garments shortly after he playfully suggested the idea of becoming the next pope. The image, shared on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, features Trump in white papal robes, adorned with a gold crucifix and a mitre, while raising his right hand in a traditional gesture associated with popes.

This social media post came on the heels of Trump’s comments to reporters earlier that week. “I’d like to be pope, that would be my number one choice,” he remarked when asked about possible successors to Pope Francis, who had passed away on April 21. Trump also commended Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York as “very good,” though experts on the Vatican speculate that it is unlikely an American will be elected as pope.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were present at Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome on April 26, marking the president's first international trip since taking office again in January.

The AI-generated image elicited a variety of responses online. While some users found it amusing, others criticized it as inappropriate, suggesting that Trump was making light of the late pope’s death.

The Vatican has announced that the papal conclave to select a new pope will commence on May 8, with cardinals from across the globe gathering in the Sistine Chapel to cast their votes in secret.

Trump and Pope Francis have had a history of verbal disagreements, particularly concerning immigration and social issues. During his second term, Trump implemented strict immigration policies, including mass deportations, which faced backlash from the Vatican.

In a letter to US Catholic bishops this year, Pope Francis referred to the immigration crackdown as a “major crisis” that undermines the dignity of migrants and cautioned against characterizing undocumented individuals as criminals.

The tension between the two dates back to 2016, when Pope Francis stated that anyone who builds walls instead of bridges is “not Christian,” a comment widely interpreted as a critique of Trump’s border wall initiative. Trump responded by labeling the remark “disgraceful” and claimed that the Mexican government was using the Argentine-born pope as a “pawn.”
