J.D. Vance Says Ukraine Won’t Win
Ukraine will not regain the territories it lost to Russia, according to US Vice President J. D.

During an interview on Charlie Kirk's podcast, a conservative organizer, Vance stated, “If this doesn’t stop, the Ukrainians aren’t winning the war.” He criticized the belief among mainstream media that prolonging the conflict would lead to a Russian collapse, allowing Ukraine to reclaim its territory and ultimately restore the pre-war status quo. He remarked, “I think there’s this weird idea among the mainstream media that if this thing goes on for just another few years, the Russians will collapse, the Ukrainians will take their territory back, and everything will go back to the way that it was before the war. That is not the reality that we live in.”
Vance warned of dire consequences should the conflict continue, stating, “You could have millions of more people killed if this thing goes on for another few years, and it could risk escalating into a nuclear war. It has to stop.” He also mentioned that American negotiators are “making progress” despite the complexities of engaging with both sides.
Expressing the frustration sometimes felt in negotiations, Vance noted, “Sometimes you’re incredibly frustrated with Ukrainians. Sometimes you’re incredibly frustrated with the Russians. And sometimes you just want to throw your hands up, but that’s what President Trump doesn’t let us do.”
These comments were made following Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a three-day ceasefire beginning May 8 to coincide with World War II victory celebrations. In response, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky accused Russia of “manipulation” and called for a 30-day ceasefire.
Russia contends that Ukraine has disregarded both the recent 30-day "energy truce" and a 30-hour Easter truce, which Ukraine had pledged to uphold. Putin has emphasized that for a lasting ceasefire to be effective, Ukraine must cease its mobilization efforts, and the West must halt arms shipments to Ukraine.
